Dre Robinson is a Jamaican born, Boston-based lyricist. Also known as Boston Dre and The Mass Jewel, Dre has built a large fan base around the New England area. In the May 2005 issue of The Source he was spotlighted in the Off The Radar column as an MC on the verge of making a national impact. In addition, he was picked as one of the Boston Globe's “Top Ten Local Artists To Watch” in 2005, and was the subject of a Boston Globe Calendar cover story on Boston Hip Hop.
Dre's buzz reached Mass Appeal Entertainment label head Marcus “DL” Siskind and his head of A&R, JAMN 94.5's DJ Gee Spin. Both were impressed with his versatility and he signed to Mass Appeal on the strength of his freestyling abilities. The single "Get Right", featuring Mobb Deep, was released to radio and gained significant attention during the summer of 2005. In Los Angeles, Power 106's Felli Fel played “Get Right” every night straight for a month. In New York, Hot 97's Cipha Sounds and DJ Enuff, as well as Power 105's Spinbad, played the song considerably. When DJ Kay Slay added “Get Right” to his “Drama Hour” show, he promptly yelled, “Give him a deal!” at the end of the song. Consequently, Kay Slay hosted Dre's following mixtape “The Mass Jewel” in February 2006. In March 2007, Dre's new single “This is That” began receiving heavy rotation on Boston's JAMN 94.5 and WERS 88.9, as well as Dre's MySpace page, ushering in a new crowd of fans and continuing Dre's buzz around Boston.
Dre is currently finishing the recording of his upcoming Mass Appeal debut album, This Is Me. The album will feature a variety of guests including Remy Ma, Papoose, Jae Millz, Ryan Toby, and Dancehall Reggae artist Mr. Lexxus as well as members from Dre's group Jacob Family.
Aside from recognition from Kay Slay, Dre Robinson has also garnered recognition from Cappadonna, who when asked which rap artists he listened to replied, “I like a lot of rappers around the way. This cat Dre Robinson in Boston made me grab my pen.” [1]
Dre Robinson is considered unique for a Boston rapper. He has the type of lyrical ability found in such Boston rappers as Mr. Lif, Edo G, Akrobatik, Daney Foxxwoodz & Young Argo as well as the mainstream appeal and punchline swagger of Jadakiss, Fabolous, and Big L. As a result, he has collaborated with a wide range of both underground and mainstream artists including Big Shug, Papoose, Chamillionaire, Mobb Deep and Suzanna Lubrano.
